We Are `Ohana - Songs of Hope CD

All in the `Ohana
Hawaii Tribune Herald, Arts & Entertainment article
November 12, 2004

Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts and education organization, is addressing the issue of substance abuse and addiction in a unique way. Using the creative talents of performing and fine artists on the Big Island and throughout Hawai`i, they have created an imaginative three phase project to support the efforts of others to treat and prevent ICE addiction and other addictions associated with illegal drugs.

The first phase of their program was the production and distribution of their album We Are `Ohana-Songs of Hope. Released on November 8, 2004, the CD features well known recording artists Aunty Nona Beamer, Keola Beamer, Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, Bruddah Kuz, James McWhinney, Damon Williams, Glynn Motoishi, Rupert Tripp Jr., Gregg Perry and Howard Shapiro.

Most radio stations on the Big Island are playing selections from the CD and the song Your Heart Will Lead You Home, featuring Damon Williams, was the number one requested song on KWXX for 3 weeks.

John Burnett music critic for Hawai`i Island Journal wrote, “I was simply floored by what I heard. This is, in my estimation, the best written, conceived and produced pop CD recorded to date on the Big Island.”

Representatives from organization working on the prevention and treatment of substance abuse and addiction have also been supportive of the CD. “This album takes the listener from problem to solution with positive uplifting messages and beats that cross over from reggae/jawaiian to country and pop. Never have I seen or heard Hawaii Island’s “Ice” crisis being addressed with such love, compassion and aloha.” so states Beth Mehau program coordinator for the North Hawai`i Drug-Free Coalition.

Puna residents Howard Shapiro, executive director, and Gregg Perry, projects coordinator, for the Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, are spearheading the efforts of this project to bring a message of hope to the community on the Big Island.

They are currently working on Phase Two; outreach to schools, community, organizations and families in Hawai‘i. This phase is being developed for implementation during the 2005-2006 school year.

To support classroom and community presentations a 30 minute motivational video is being produced. Entitled “Stories of Hope & Recovery” the video will feature the stories of individuals who have overcome drug & alcohol addiction as well as projects that have had positive results in their communities. Outstanding, talented and rehabilitated youth who serve as positive role models and organizations working on the treatment and prevention of substance abuse will also be invited to participate in this video. Music from We Are ‘Ohana-Songs of Hope will support its message of recovery and empowerment.

Scheduled live performances/presentations in Big Island communities and schools will be based on a three format approach.

  • Format 1 will target small audiences such as classrooms;
  • Format 2 will target medium audiences such as school assemblies, etc., and
  • Format 3 will target large audiences such as concerts and festivals.

The artists featured on the CD will participate along with other local performing artists from the individual communities. Students from the participating schools will be invited to perform on stage also. Local community members, students, and performers will share their personal experiences regarding substance abuse, addiction and recovery.

Phase Three of the project is a pilot segment called Action Community Teens (A.C.T.). It focuses on youth participating in positive community mobilization activities as an extension of the outreach presentations they participate in. Under appropriate adult supervision these youth will be giving back to the community in positive, healthy ways. These A.C.T.-ivities highlight youth expressing themselves through public art events and community service projects.

Recording artists from We Are `Ohana-Songs of Hope CD and representatives from organizations working on the treatment and prevention of substance abuse and addiction (were) at Borders in Kona on February 26 at 1pm and Borders in Hilo on March 5 at 2pm.

The CD is being distributed at retail outlets throughout Hawai`i by Aloha Music International. It can also be purchased online at www.buyhawaiianmusic.com or www.pecktunes.com
