OUR
BEGINNINGS
The Power of Choice Hamakua
(POCH) began in the fall of 1999 when Five Mountains Hawaii facilitated
the Honokaa Focus Group at Honokaa High School. Ten community members
established priorities in the areas of health and quality of life
in our sector of North Hawaii.
The name Power of Choice
was given by Hamakua resident and POCH member Tracy Tampos. Our
members consist of parents, volunteers, youth, community police
officers, teachers and community members who believe that we can
win this war on Ice and other dangerous drugs that are destroying
our communities today.
We meet every month and
engage in collaborative community involvement strategies, events,
projects, media campaigns and we work together with existing treatment
facilities. We support community efforts with volunteer exchanges,
joint fundraising, and other activities. We are action-oriented
and outcome-driven while always being sensitive to the unique needs
and characteristics of the individuals and communities we serve.
POCH is a member of the
North Hawaii Drug Free Coalition (NHDFC) which also consists of
the Kohala Coalition Against Drugs, Waikoloa Community Action Group
and Waimea Power of Choice. The Coalition is funded in part by the
Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Program (OJJDP).
MISSION
"Power of Choice Hamakua
cultivates a commitment to working together through education and
programs that promote self-awareness, respect and perpetuation of
our community's heritage as a foundation for a drug-free, healthy
community."
VISION
"In a healthy community
caring people come together in harmony to provide for their needs
and pass their heritage and values on to their children."
GOAL
"A Healthy Community
Is A Drug-Free Community."
