Community Activities

HCRC
Hawaii County Resource Center

We envision our island as a place where people can trust their county government and feel supported by it; a place where a high level of cooperation and involvement encourages community-based solutions that respond to community needs.

Mission ... The mission of the HCRC is to increase capacity for the Hawaii Island community and Hawaii County departments in the areas of collaboration, organization and funding, making Hawaii Island a better place to live.

What does HCRC do?

  • We help the public and county government collaborate on solutions for community needs.
  • We help citizens and nonprofit agencies learn how and where to look for grants. We also can review grant proposals before they are sent to a funder.

What does HCRC offer?

  • Facilitators for community and/or county government meetings.
  • Workshops on topics like conducting public meetings, facilitation skills, strategic planning, problem solving, and how to write grants.
  • Skill-building in how to access grant funding sources on the Internet and other grant references available in HCRC and our County Information Resource Center.
  • Opportunities for volunteers to get involved teaching, training and doing grant research.

How does HCRC work?

  • As a communications network, HCRC staff and volunteers carry information back and forth between communities and the county government.
  • Since the Resource Center is a program of the County's Research and Development Department, we have direct connections to governmental departments.
  • Out facilitator team and staff reach out into the communities on our island to hear first hand the needs and concerns of citizens.

HCRC Guidelines

  • We encourage communities to look at government as a resource, not as an answer.
  • We encourage communities and county government to build relationships and t rust for the long term benefit of our families and neighborhoods.
  • We encourage development of self-responsibility and self-governance.

HCRC is a work in progress ... Still in its growing and developing stages.

The Healing Our Island website is a Hawaii County resource to promote a drug free, healthy community. It's mission is to have everyone working together to heal our island from the harmful effects of crystal methamphetamine or 'ice.' Hawaii has been impacted by the harmful effects of substance abuse upon families, businesses, and communities. In order to improve Hawaii's quality of life, this site promotes community based programs and grassroots efforts toward education, prevention, treatment and recovery for youth and at-risk adults. The goal is to ensure that Hawaii Island is a healthy and safe place for our children and our families. This information exchange is being provided as a public service.

The County of Hawaii strives to keep this material accurate and up-to-date. The viewer is cautioned to check with the appropriate County department or agency responsible for maintaining the information to validate its accuracy.
