Kua O Ka La is a New Century
Public Charter School serving the youth and the
community of rural Puna on the Island of Hawai’i.
Kua O Ka La is supported by Ho’oulu Lahui,
a non-profit corporation that specializes in the
integration of education and Hawaiian cultural
programs to achieve a truly innovative approach
to education. The student population less than
50 in grades 7-11, they offer small class sizes
that enable, individual attention, fostering better
academic performance.
Programs & Curriculum
The curriculum is designed for
physically active youth whose learning styles
are better suited to experiential hands-on education
conducted primarily in a natural environment.
Most courses will have a strong project based,
hands-on, interdisciplinary component aligned
with core academic requirements and individualized
directed learning when possible. Classes offered
in addition to core curriculum include the following:
• Agroforestry
• Applied Science
• Canoeing
• Cultural Resource Management
• Hawaiian Language & History
• Hula
• Fine Arts
• Lauhala Weaving
• Life Skills
• Native Hawaiian plant knowledge
• Career Paths such as carpentry, solar
energy, rock work, etc.
• Physical Education: calisthenics, Makahiki
games, swimming, etc.
• Safety, wilderness and trail lore
• Technology: multi-media, keyboarding,
and computer literacy
Vision:
Kua O Ka La has adopted the concept of Ke Ala
Pono-The Right Path-to describe our goal of nurturing
and developing our youth. We believe that every
individual has a unique potential and that is
our responsibility to help our students learn
to work together within the local community to
create a future that is pono-right.
Mission:
To provide students of the East Hawaii community
with a quality education that addresses their
distinctive learning styles in order to enable
them to become contributing members of society.
School Location:
Kua O Ka La is located at the
Pu’ala’a, Puna, next to Ahalanui Park
and Mauna Kea warm pond. Pu’ala’a
is an intact ancient Hawaiian village complete
with historical sites, fishponds, and native habitat
that affords an ideal outdoor learning environment
for our project-based curriculum.
