The Hawaii County Resource Center in the Department of Research and Development is now accepting Healing Our Island grant applications. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a regular basis until all funds have been awarded.

What is the Healing Our Island Community Fund?

The Healing Our Island Community Fund was designed to allow community-based grassroots groups located in Hawaii County to access funding up to $2,000 to fight drug and substance abuse within their communities.

Where does the money come from?

The State of Hawaii funds the County of Hawaii with a “Grant-In-Aid” for purposes of fighting substance abuse. The Hawaii County Resource Center is responsible for administering the Healing Our Island mini-grant program.

Some tips to keep in mind:

• Your project, program, or event must specifically address drug prevention and/or drug education
• Applications that reflect collaboration between two or more groups within the community are preferred
• Preference will be given to first-time Healing Our Island applicants

• Before scheduling an event or project, be sure to check this website for already scheduled events that may conflict with your plans
• Read the grant information and application packet thoroughly and carefully; follow all instructions

What will NOT be funded?

• Alcohol
• Personnel costs
• Projects or events that have already taken place
• If refreshments are purchased with grant funds, please make sure that healthy options outweigh “junk” food

If your group’s application is approved:

You will be required to submit a Final Report within 30 days of the completion of your project. The Final Report includes:

1. Final Report Form
2. All receipts
3. Copy of your press release
4. Copies of anti-drug or drug education materials presented and distributed during your project

Grant Application and Award Schedule

• Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis at the Hawaii County Resource Center.
• Approved grants will be funded on an ongoing basis until all the funds have been awarded.

How often are grants reviewed?

The grant review committee meets on a regular basis, about once per month.

Deadline

• There is no deadline, however grants received in HCRC by 4:30 pm on the 10th of each month will generally be reviewed at the next scheduled review committee meeting.
• Review of grant applications received after 4:30 pm on the 10th of each month may be delayed by a month.

GRANT WRITING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

If you are new to grant writing, this is the best way to learn. Everyone calls this a “grant-writing” process. To be precise, you will be writing the grant application or grant proposal. The “Grant” is the money awarded to successful applications or proposals. Other grant definitions are provided below.
